Gurukul System

A systematic and organised education system was prevalent in India from ancient times. It acquired a distinct position in the early Vedic Age, with the 'gurukul system'. The gurukul system of education is a concept, where children learn under great scholars and live in a friendly environment with no distractions around them, attaining knowledge and overall growth and development.

The 'gurukul', in modern terms, can be called residential schools. Typically, the gurukul was a teacher's house or a monastery. Several temples and ashrams also served as the location for schools. Some gurukuls even existed in forests or on the banks of rivers. The teachers at gurukul imparted knowledge on literature, medicine, astrology, warfare, philosophy, scriptures, etc. The students also practised meditation, Vedic chants and yoga under the teacher's supervision. Apart from this, they also received knowledge on various aspects of life. Social manners and values were also taught.

The students were also taught the Vedas and Sanskrit was the medium. Self-control, development of character, social awareness, development of personality, preservation of knowledge and culture, etc. were some of the objectives taught through the Vedas.

"A monastery is a building in which monks live and worship."
